5/16/21 About 11 miles down the closed Lucas Canyon trail on a cold, rainy day. The weather, combined with overgrown trail, made for a most excellent adventure.
1 That doesn't apply to us does it?
2 It's a heavy drizzle as we start out with the only creek crossing.
3 The wildflowers are showing their Lakers playoff spirit.
4 Leaving the fireroad and starting on the singletrack down to the bottom of the canyon.
5 Some cool, old signs along the way.
6 These were the views for most of the day. I loved it. They created a great ambiance and gave the day a little bit more of an adventurous feel.
7 Almost down to the bottom of the canyon, and the trail is getting more and more rustic.
8 This is my kind of trail!
9 The rain is getting a little heavier, and it really heightens the bright greens.
10 Made it to the bottom of the canyon, and things are really starting to get overgrown. Awesome!
11 Our lunch spot. It's getting uncomfortably cold standing still while sopping wet in the light rain.
12 The "trail".
13 The trail is getting hard to follow, but it's beautiful down here.
14 This picturesque spot would end-up being our turnaround point for the day. The trail just disappears in the foliage not far past here.
15 Dad's photo of me at the turnaround spot.
16 The trail is just gone. We'll have to come back and attack it from the other direction next time. Time to start heading back now.
17 The weather starts to lighten and the ocean comes into view as we're just about back to the trailhead. End to another fun adventure in the Santa Anas. My souvenir for the day was four ticks on me when I got home, two of which were already starting to dig in deep. My first time ever getting ticks on the trail!
